Jewellery Designs
Lakshmi’s passion for jewelry began in childhood, nurtured by the vibrant markets of the Himalayan kingdoms of Sikkim and Nepal. She was captivated by the region’s Indo-Chinese Buddhist aesthetics—corals, turquoises, and dragon motifs—sparking an early fascination with jewelry-making. Her move to Afghanistan opened new horizons, immersing her in the rich heritage of Turkic-Mongol Central Asian jewelry, renowned for its Lapis Lazuli and Malachite accents. Exploring markets with her family, she engaged with local jewelers, asking endless questions and developing a deep curiosity about gemstones and design.
Living within Afghanistan’s international community exposed Lakshmi to diverse cultural influences that shaped her creative outlook. During her studies at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Delhi, she further refined her understanding of design through exposure to India’s traditional crafts. Delhi’s bustling markets became a wellspring of inspiration, fostering connections with artisans and introducing her to indigenous techniques like Bidri, Thewa, and Meenakari.
Over the years, Lakshmi has amassed a collection of materials, each piece carrying its own story. Her time in Kuala Lumpur sparked an interest in Peranakan jewelry, which she has reimagined by blending it with influences from other cultures, resulting in distinctive new designs.
Her travels across Europe deepened her understanding of jewelry traditions and techniques, including granulation, stone setting, and filigree. Though she explores other creative disciplines, Lakshmi often returns to jewelry-making. Revisiting old projects with fresh ideas, she transforms them into innovative creations. For her, the relationship between art and jewelry is seamless—each practice inspiring the other, resulting in a harmonious fusion of craftsmanship and creativity.
