Jewellery Designs
As a child, Lakshmi's fascination with jewelry design bloomed amid the lively markets of the Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim. Surrounded by vibrant colors and intricate designs, she was captivated by the Indo-Chinese Buddhist influences, including unique elements like corals, turquoises, and dragon motifs specific to the region. Later, her family's move to Afghanistan unveiled a whole new world, introducing her to the exquisite Turkic-Mongol Central Asian jewelry adorned with Lapiz Lazuli and Malachite.
Even as a child, Lakshmi engaged with local jewellers, absorbing invaluable knowledge about gemstones and the meticulous art of jewelry-making. These experiences honed her design skills from an early age. The pieces she crafted were not just jewelry; they were a testament to her boundless curiosity, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures that have shaped her artistic journey.
Her experiences in Afghanistan were complemented by her exposure to the international community, where diverse cultures and traditions merged seamlessly. This multicultural influence continued during her time studying Fashion at NIFT, Delhi. Collaborating with her sister she explored various crafts, from filigree to enamelling, and indigenous techniques like Bidri, Thewa, and Meenakari. Delhi's bustling markets provided endless opportunities to discover new crafts and textiles and connect with craftsmen, fostering a rich reservoir of creative ideas.
Lakshmi's creative process is deeply intertwined with her collected treasure trove spanning four decades. Every piece tells a story and, with fresh eyes, she breathes new life into abandoned projects, transforming them into innovative creations. Her global adventures, including a stay in Kuala Lumpur, introduced her to Peranakan pieces, which she seamlessly integrated with her multicultural collection. This fusion of diverse elements mirrors her approach to both art and jewelry—each piece reflecting a unique destiny, waiting to be realized.
Traveling through Europe offered Lakshmi a deeper understanding of jewelry influences across ages and regions. She delved into techniques like granulation, filigree, enamel inlay, metal inlays, stone settings, and chainmailing. Despite her multifaceted pursuits, she occasionally takes breaks to immerse herself in crafting jewelry pieces, reinventing existing designs with her distinctive touch. For Lakshmi, the synergy between her art and jewelry endeavours is undeniable, with each inspiring and enriching the other, creating a harmonious fusion of creativity and craftsmanship.
