A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE: OUR INTERCONNECTED, INTERRELATED, INTERDEPENDENT EXISTENCE
INTERACTIONS ART: The cosmic fabric seems to abide by mathematical codes crafted by humanity, intertwining with our core and influencing our perception of the universe. Symbols, numbers, and languages emerging from our collective environment reflect these universal patterns, forming a shared thread that binds us together and resonates within the intricate connections of our social bonds—with family, friends, and communities.
The Interactions series acts as 'a shared universal language accessible to all, unrestricted by individual or exclusive affiliations.' It encapsulates the human journey, transcending cultural, ethnic, geographic, and societal confines, embodying the cohesive truth of our interconnected, interrelated, and interdependent existence. It achieves this by employing essential existential elements: Creation, Lifecycles, Shape, Color, Movement, Direction, Energy, Space, and Time.
Its philosophy holds that CREATION transcends boundaries, surpassing the limits of race, culture, and geography; LIFECYCLES entwine our experiences, uniting us through the shared path of birth, life, and death; SHAPE AND COLOR infuse all our creations. The eternal rhythms of MOVEMENT AND DIRECTION are universally inherent, while the dimensions of ENERGY, SPACE, and TIME are limitless and infinite.

SYMBOLS - Mathematical & Cultural that have inspired the Interactions series: The Interactions series draws its inspiration from symbols, both mathematical and cultural, that have seamlessly woven themselves into the very fabric of our historical and existential narratives. These symbols, fostered by the exchange of ideas facilitated through migrations and cultural interactions, create a shared language that transcends all borders, resonating with the collective human psyche. They have engendered a synchronicity of thought, becoming a bridge that unites diverse communities.
These symbols, originating from various cultures and belief systems, often reverberate with shared themes and concepts. They employ fundamental existential elements inspired by the universal and cosmic. To provide a glimpse into this profound symbology, here are a few remarkable examples:
SYMBOLS MATHEMATICAL
Sierpinski Triangle: It demonstrates the recurrence of patterns across various scales, from the smallest to the infinitely vast. It illustrates the replication of triangles at progressively larger stages of growth, mirroring phenomena ranging from atomic structures to the movement patterns of galaxies. This repetition of shapes is observed in the spiralling structures of our DNA, and galaxies echoing the same form at every scale. |
Pascal’s Triangle: It conceals several mathematical wonders that resonate in our cultural symbols. It conceals the intricate Sierpinski triangle fractals within its structure. Each number within the triangle is the sum of the two numbers directly above it, and each row's sum represents a power of 2, illustrating a parent-child relationship. The Star of David emerges when two triangles are drawn around an element of Pascal's Triangle, resulting in identical products at the corners. Furthermore, Pascal's Triangle also conceals the Fibonacci sequence, a numerical pattern found in nature, manifesting in phenomena such as the petal count in flowers and patterns of natural growth.

SYMBOLS NATURE AND CULTURAL
CREST
TROUGH
|
Wave: The essence of a wave lies in the dynamic interplay between its crest and trough. Without either element, waves flatten into a mere straight line. Waves function as carriers of both energy and information, propagating through oscillations in diverse mediums. They encompass a wide array of phenomena, from light and sound to the intricate behaviours of quantum particles such as electrons and photons. In the realm of quantum mechanics, particles demonstrate a dual nature, simultaneously displaying characteristics of both waves and particles. This duality is symbolized in cultural representations as male and female. This intricate interplay finds reflection in numerical systems, which incorporate negative and positive numbers, as well as fundamental mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, embodying the delicate balance between opposing elements.
|
Yin-Yang: It portrays a wave dividing a circle into black and white, demonstrating the harmonious interaction and interdependence of opposites. The dots within the halves symbolize androgyny, denoting the presence of the opposite gender within each part. In Taoist philosophy, it embodies balance, symbolically representing the harmonious blend of male and female energies. |
Shri Yantra Mandala: A significant Hindu symbol, embodies the essence of both microcosm and macrocosm, representing the fundamental duality of creative energy encapsulated in androgyny. Its nine interlocking triangles signify the dynamic interplay between male and female energies. Among these, four triangles point upwards, representing the male, while five point downwards, symbolizing the female, illustrating the universal act of creation. Within this arrangement, the fifth female triangle, akin to the 'absolute,' serves as a bridge to the unrepresented—the invisible, nameless, and formless—acting as the vanishing point within the triangles. The Yantra's square, marked by four gates, signifies the four cardinal directions, embodying a sense of orientation and balance. Encircling circles represent plurality and infinity, embraced by lotus petals that symbolize the continuous process of creation.
|
Hexagram: Known as the star of David in Jewish tradition, serves as a symbol of infinity in space. Similar to the Shri Yantra, it is rooted in the concept of the interdependence of opposites. The Hexagram features upward and downward pointing triangles, symbolizing the harmonious union of male and female energies, emphasizing the balance and interplay between these fundamental forces. |

The Interactions Series intricately weaves the profound interplay between male and female interdependence, embodying the eternal cycle of creation and the relentless march of time through The Flower and The Arrow.
THE FLOWER: akin to the Moon, embodies the very essence of feminine creativity and cyclical energy. Much like the Moon's phases mark the passage of time, reflecting life's perpetual ebb and flow of creativity, the "Interactions" artwork portrays an eternal cycle of creation and rebirth. The revolution around a central point symbolise the floral form, encapsulating the fundamental aspects of creation, new beginnings, and the emergence of life anew. |
THE ARROW: embodies the essence of solar vitality, characterised by strength and masculinity. Its resolute triangular head points forward with unwavering determination, capturing the unyielding spirit akin to mountains. Within the Interactions paintings, arrows serve as powerful symbols of direction and movement, representing the ceaseless currents of time, forever propelling forward. |
In the Interactions paintings, rotational geometry shapes the five designs where arrows, symbolising the male essence, revolve around central pivot points, metaphorically capturing life bursting from floral forms to symbolise the cosmic energy that birthed the universe.
LIFECYCLES
SHAPE
By utilising fundamental shapes such as triangles, squares, circles, and spirals, combined with numerical concepts, the five designs in the Interactions series act as a bridge between scientific and philosophical ideas. They explore themes such as
- the Singularity of self (represented by the central point in rotational geometry)
- the Duality of complementary interdependence (observed in the negative and positive spaces)
- the Trinity of creation, preservation, and destruction (depicted by three-sided triangles in the Interactions designs)
- the Quaternity of directional dimensions (defined by the square bounds in each Interactions time slice)
- the Plurality of our beliefs (embodied in the circular form created through rotational geometry)
- the Infinity of Space (illustrated by the lifecycle Interactions line)
COLOUR
In the Interactions paintings, the language of colour plays a vital role, vividly illustrating the enduring connections among people worldwide throughout history. The artworks are divided into two series: the Color series, based on the Color wheel, and the Non-color series, which relies on Neutral hues.
Within the Color series, the artworks showcase how the same shape, when presented in different hues, is perceived diversely by individuals. Each shape is painted in three different tones following the triad of the Colour Wheel, such as Orange, Green, and Purple. The shift from Orange might evoke a Hindu interpretation, while a change to Purple could be seen through a Buddhist lens, and Green might be interpreted as Islamic. Furthermore, the paintings delve into the impact of changing light directions on perception, categorizing them into two groups: "Interactions" illuminated by an external light source and "Interactions Inverse" affected by an internal light source. This approach enriches the intricate interplay of colours, emphasising the depth and complexity of human perception across various cultures and historical contexts. |
MOVEMENT
Movement is a fundamental aspect of life and the physical universe, involving interactions among objects, organisms, or systems across different scales. Human movements, ranging from simple gestures to complex migratory behaviors observed over millennia, deeply impact our lives. At the microscopic level, particles are in constant motion, while celestial bodies move through orbits and revolutions around planetary axes on a cosmic scale. These diverse movement patterns are essential for understanding the natural world and our place within it. The interactions series visually represents these varied patterns of movement using arrows, freezing them as moments in time.
DIRECTION
Arrows in the Interactions artwork are potent symbols, signifying both direction and the dynamic interplay between negative and positive spaces. They depict the passage of time, the rhythmic shift between day and night, and the harmony between opposing forces. They act as visual guides, steering the viewer through a transformative journey.
ENERGY
Energy, Space, and Time are the foundational pillars of our existence, shaping the very essence of reality. The boundless manifestations of energy serve as the primary driving force behind all life, providing deep insights into the mysteries of the universe. In the Interactions artworks, energy becomes tangible, depicted through intricate rotational geometry encircling a symbolic Windmill, symbolizing the conversion of energy into a palpable, creative force akin to the birth of the Universe.
SPACE
The connection between a wave's crest and trough is evident in the interplay of negative and positive spaces. As the crest’s height reduces, the trough's depth decreases proportionately, eventually blending into a single line, dissolving the wave. In the Interactions paintings, positive space defines the borders of negative space, highlighting their interdependence and drawing inspiration from the Yin Yang philosophy. Each component relies on the other, vividly demonstrating their mutual reliance, mirroring the rhythmic movement of a wave.
TIME
The irreversible directional flow of time in our reality finds representation through arrows denoting interactions between negative and positive spaces, marking the shift from day to night. This temporal transition serves as the foundation for the colour series comprising 12 paintings depicting the 12 day-light hours, and the Interactions Inverse series of 12 paintings illustrating the 12 night-time hours. Every painting encapsulates a moment in time and incorporates symbolic numbers associated with temporal concepts, such as 7 representing the days of the week, 8 symbolising directions, and 12 denoting the months of the year, among others. |
Interpretation PAINTINGS: PRIMARY, SECONDARY, TERTIARY WINDMILL, TERTIARY DROMENON, NAUTILUS
PRIMARY
Colours: RED, YELLOW, BLUE
|
This group of paintings explores the core of human connections, embracing the duality found in the Moon's two contrasting faces—one visible to us on Earth, the other shrouded in mystery. Within the square canvas, triangles intersect, forming a dynamic interplay of arrows . Seven arrows symbolize positivity and forward movement, while another seven, representing the absence of space, move in the opposite direction.
Triangles, as the most basic polygons, intricately blend mathematical precision with metaphysical harmony, mirroring the cosmic balance. Triangles encapsulate the trinity of creation, preservation, and destruction, embodying diverse interpretations of this profound concept across cultures worldwide. As arrowheads, they symbolise a spiritual ascent, reaching towards the divine. |
SECONDARY
Colours: PURPLE, ORANGE, GREEN
|
This group of paintings portrays the origin of our existence as a blossoming flower, symbolising the creation of the Universe. Within this circular and rotational geometry, arrows interconnect to create radial movement in two directions. Twelve 'arrows' in the positive space extend outward, while twelve arrows' in the negative space radiate inward. This interaction mirrors the petal shapes of a flower, signifying creation and new life.
The symbolism of circles across cultures extends to planets, the movement of wheels representing time, lifecycles and infinity. |
TERTIARY - WINDMILL
Colours: BLUE-PURPLE, RED-ORANGE, YELLOW-GREEN
|
This group of paintings embody a spiralling form that symbolises our existence, energy, and time. It features four quadrants enclosed in a larger square, with eight arrows in the positive space moving clockwise and eight arrows in the negative space moving counterclockwise.
Symbolically squares represent the four cardinal directions, foundations, stability, order, and the changing seasons. The Windmill, serving as a solar symbol, signifies the harnessing of energy. This symbolism is widespread in both mathematics and various cultural symbols across the globe. |
TERTIARY - DROMENON
Colours: RED-PURPLE, YELLOW-ORANGE, BLUE-GREEN
|
This group of paintings portrays an arrangement of nested squares, illustrating life's journey from the outer world to the inner sanctum—the heart—a pivotal point of departure and return. These paintings symbolize the eternal cycles of expansion and contraction, mirroring the layers we navigate as space explorers to decipher the mysteries of the universe. In the interplay of positive and negative spaces, arrows trace both clockwise and counterclockwise paths, embodying the dynamic essence of our exploration.
Symbolically the Dromenon represents intricate networks and connections, reminiscent of patterns found in spiderwebs, neural and transport networks. |
NAUTILUS
Colours (Neutral hues) - BLACK, WHITE, GRAY, BROWN, BEIGE
|
NAUTILUS the oldest living fossil
|
The artworks take their name from the Nautilus, that has preserved its unchanged form for millions of years. Its spiral shape emerges from a growth property called self-similarity or scaling. As the Nautilus outgrows each section, it constructs new, larger chambers with the same proportions. an idea represented by the Sierpinski fractal which demonstrates the recurrence of patterns across various scales, from the smallest to the infinitely large.
|
DNA
|
Milky Way galaxy
|
This group of paintings delves into the concept of 'self and universe,' exploring our relationship with the world that reaches far beyond our physical and mental confines. Our unique identity is intricately woven into the double helical structure of our DNA, defining our singular presence amidst the boundless expanse of the universe. In a parallel fashion, the distinctive form of our galaxy is moulded by a double helical spiral, setting it apart in the vast cosmic tapestry of infinite galaxies. This link we share with the grander spaces surrounding us acts as a symbolic embodiment of 'self and universe.' This symbolism reverberates through the recurring patterns discernible at every level, vividly captured in the double spirals depicted within the paintings.
|
Double Helix
|
In the paintings Arrows denote interconnectedness, representing the intertwined nature of space and time within this double helix of galaxies spiraling towards a central Black Hole, where time comes to a standstill, and a White Hole, signifying existence, and reversing this process.
|
+ve & -ve Spaces
|
Positive and Negative Spaces:
The paintings employ a continuous line, dividing the canvas into positive and negative. The positive spiral, shaped through rotational geometry, mirrors an identical void form symbolising time and space endlessly expanding outward and contracting inward towards infinities. |
SPIRALS: Embody the rhythm of life, continuity and progress, the never-ending journey into the unknown, serving as the inspiration for the Interactions paintings. The golden ratio, originating from the Fibonacci sequence, has a well-established connection to the pleasing proportions observed in the natural world. Logarithmic spirals find their reflection in the structure of our galaxy and the Nautilus shell. Nature is abundant with various spiral patterns, some of which are mathematically defined, including the Archimedean and Fermat spirals.
|
PATTERNS SPIRALS: Spirals, a prevalent motif in various global cultures, carry profound symbolic meanings. They symbolize ideas such as fertility, the womb, lifecycles, growth, and transformation, mirroring the natural world's phenomena, like the unfurling of new leaves. Sunflowers' growth patterns adhere to the Fibonacci sequence, influencing both the number of petals and seeds they bear. Even tornadoes, as they spiral, display these distinctive patterns. These natural occurrences have served as abundant sources of inspiration for cultural symbols, urban design, art and architecture.
